John joined Mazanec, Raskin & Ryder Co., L.P.A. in 1988 and serves as the firm's President and Managing Partner. John has his residence in the Cleveland office, maintaining a diverse practice including Civil Rights defense, public entity defense, appellate work at all court levels, professional defense, and probate litigation. John has practices in the civil rights area, defending municipalities as well as police and public entities. In his appellate practice, he has argued before the 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd, 5 th, 6 th, 8 th, 9 th, 10 th, and 11 th Ohio Appellate Districts. Additionally, he has handled over 30 cases as lead counsel in the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals and the Ohio Supreme Court. His appellate docket contains approximately 25 appeals cases in state and federal courts at any point in time. Licensed to practice in the State of Ohio since 1983 (0021494) and admitted to practice in the United States District Court, Northern District of Ohio and Southern District of Ohio, United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court. John's experience includes: DEFENSE OF POLICE, PUBLIC OFFICIALS AND PUBLIC ENTITIES Over 19 years representing municipalities, including defending cases on behalf of police and public entities alleging violations of civil rights as guaranteed by the First, Fourth, Fifth, Eighth and Fourteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution including claims of jail suicide, police pursuit, false arrest, excessive force by police officers and failure to properly train police officers. Defense of Public Entities in Land Use and Zoning Related Matters - alleged deprivation of plaintiff's Fifth Amendment rights asserting an unconstitutional taking of property without just compensation by virtue of application of zoning laws and ordinances. Defense of Administrative Appeals to Common Pleas Courts regarding zoning and permit related issues. DEFENSE OF EMPLOYMENT RELATED CLAIMS Defense of Employers - (private and public entities) in claims asserted by former or current employees alleging violations of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Age Discrimination in Employment Act, Americans with Disabilities Act , Family Medical Leave Act and Ohio Civil Rights Act. Representation of civil defendants in federal and state courts throughout Personally handled appeals in the First, Second, Third, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, Eighth, Ninth, Tenth and Eleventh Districts. FEDERAL APPELLATE EXPERIENCE Handled over 100 Sixth Circuit appeals as lead counsel. Defended successfully against a number of petitions for writs of certiorari.
